Best ChatGPT Books in 2026: 10 Books for Prompting, Work and the Story of OpenAI
Updated 7 November 2026. By Parikshit Khanna.
This guide separates three reading goals: getting started with ChatGPT, developing prompts you can test, and understanding how OpenAI built the product. The most useful book depends on which of those you need.

Start with Pam Baker’s second edition of ChatGPT For Dummies if you want a walkthrough. Choose Co-Intelligence for work habits, Prompt Engineering for Generative AI for reusable prompt patterns, and Empire of AI or The Optimist for the history of OpenAI.

How these books were chosen
The practical titles are compared by edition, reader level and whether they teach the ChatGPT interface, prompting principles or API development. The reporting titles give different perspectives on OpenAI. Check current product documentation when a screenshot or model name differs.
Test a prompt before buying a prompt book
Use the same fictional or sanitized meeting note twice. First ask for a summary. Then ask for a table of actions, owners and dates, with “not stated” wherever the note gives no answer. Check each cell against the note and count any invented details.
Choose a beginner guide if you want help finding features. Choose a prompting book if you need repeatable formats and ways to check output. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT prompting guide for current examples.
