WhatsApp AI Bot Consultation in India 2026: Lead Capture, Bookings and Support on the WhatsApp Business Platform
PUBLISHED 31 OCTOBER 2026 • FACTS CHECKED 31 OCTOBER 2026

Quick answer
India has more than 500 million WhatsApp users (Government of India estimate, 2021), which makes a WhatsApp bot the fastest way to answer a lead within seconds. In 2026, Meta allows businesses to use AI to serve their own customers, for sales, support, bookings and updates, but bars general purpose AI assistants from the WhatsApp Business API from 15 January 2026. Design the bot around a clear business task, collect opt in, and always give customers a route to a person.
What a WhatsApp AI bot does well
Instant replies to ad leads: answer Click to WhatsApp ad and website enquiries in seconds, day or night.
Qualification and routing: ask the right questions, score the lead and send it to the right salesperson.
Approved information: share brochures, price lists, catalogues and location pins that your team has approved.
Bookings: appointments, site visits, demo classes and table reservations, with reminders.
Updates: order, delivery, payment and renewal messages through utility templates.
Document collection: admission or onboarding documents collected with consent.
Human handoff: the bot passes the chat to a person with a summary when the customer asks or the case needs it.

What changed on WhatsApp in 2025 and 2026
Per message pricing: since 1 July 2025, Meta charges per template message (marketing, utility and authentication) instead of per conversation. Rates change only on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October, so check the current India rate card before you budget.
Customer service window: when a customer messages you, a 24 hour window opens for free form replies. Chats that start from a Click to WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page button get a longer free entry window if you reply in time. Meta's pricing page lists which messages are free.
Local billing: eligible Indian businesses can be billed locally from January 2026.
AI rules: from 15 January 2026, AI providers may not distribute general purpose assistants through the Business API. A business using AI for its own customer service remains allowed, according to Meta's statement to TechCrunch.
Opt in and human access: the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy requires opt in, honouring opt outs, and a clear way to reach a person when you use automation.
DPDP Act: the DPDP Rules were notified in November 2025, with consent, notice and security duties phased in over 18 months.

Frequently asked questions
Is an AI chatbot allowed on WhatsApp in 2026?
Yes, for your own business tasks such as sales, support, bookings and updates. What Meta bars from 15 January 2026 is distributing a general purpose AI assistant through the Business API.
How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost in India?
Meta charges per template message by category, in rupees for eligible Indian businesses, and your provider may add a platform fee. Check Meta's current rate card, because rates change each quarter.
Can the bot hand chats to my sales team?
Yes, and the WhatsApp policy expects a clear route to a person when you automate. A good handoff passes a short summary so the customer does not repeat themselves.
How fast can a WhatsApp bot pilot go live?
A focused pilot on one use case is usually quicker than a full rollout. Time depends on template approval, provider setup and CRM integration, so plan with your provider.
Who can help with WhatsApp AI bot consultation in India?
Parikshit Khanna offers consultation, strategy, pilot setup and team training from Delhi NCR, onsite across India and online.
