AI Voice Clone and Deepfake Fraud: A Safety Playbook for Wealthy Families and Promoters in India
The phone rings. It is your son's voice, frightened, asking for money right now. The voice sounds exactly right. In 2026 that call may not be your son at all. Generative AI can now copy a voice from a few seconds of audio, and fraudsters in India are using it.
In short: AI voice clones and deepfake videos are already being used against Indian families. A family code word, the call back rule and two person approval for transfers stop most of these frauds.

This is already happening in India
A Mumbai businessman was reportedly defrauded by a caller who used an AI cloned voice of his son pleading for help.
In Indore, a resident reportedly lost ₹1.83 lakh after an AI generated voice impersonated a relative, and a play school owner reportedly lost ₹97,500 to a similar call.
In April 2026, PIB Fact Check publicly flagged a video as fake and AI generated, warning that neither the Government of India nor the minister shown had endorsed the scheme it promoted.
These cases are recorded in the AI Incident Database. Wealthy families and promoters are natural targets: their voices and faces are public through interviews, events and social media, and they or their staff can move money quickly.
The family safety playbook
Agree a family code word that is never written in any chat or email. Anyone asking for money in an emergency must say it.
Use the call back rule: hang up and call the person on the number already saved in your phone, never the number that called you.
Treat urgency and secrecy as red flags. Real emergencies survive a five minute check.
Set a two person approval for any transfer above a fixed limit, for the family office and the business.
On a suspicious video call, ask a personal question only the real person would know, or ask them to turn their head and move a hand across the face.
Brief your drivers, house staff, executive assistants and accounts team. They are often the first people a fraudster calls.
If money has gone, call the national cyber crime helpline 1930 at once and report at cybercrime.gov.in. Speed helps banks freeze funds.
Why a short training session works
People fall for deepfakes because they have never heard one. In my family and office safety sessions, I play live examples of cloned voices and AI video, show how easily they are made, and then run a drill so everyone practises the code word and call back rule. Most families finish the session with a written one page protocol for home and office. The same session covers safe everyday use of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot, so the family gains the benefits of AI while staying protected.

Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if a call is an AI voice clone?
Often you cannot tell by ear. Treat any urgent request for money as suspect, hang up and call back on the number saved in your phone, and ask for the family code word.
What should I do if money has already been sent?
Call the national cyber crime helpline 1930 at once and report at cybercrime.gov.in, then inform your bank. Speed improves the chance of freezing funds.
Who in the household should be trained?
Everyone who can move money or share information: family members, executive assistants, the accounts team, drivers and house staff.
What does the safety session include?
Live examples of cloned voices and AI video, a drill on the code word and call back rule, and a written one page protocol for home and office. It can be combined with practical training on everyday AI tools.
